Escaping My Cocoon

How I Found My Wings

By Rose Smith

“Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”-Susan Jeffers

I slap my face to stay awake. My daughter and brother are fast asleep. I crank up the music, nodding in and out, struggling to keep my eyes open. If only I can make it to the next exit…if I can get a drink, I can stay awake... Relieved... I see an exit sign.

The sudden impact of my car hitting tough metal wakes me. Praying, please let my daughter and brother be alive!

My car was totaled, the cruise set on 75, crossing the median and four lanes of highway before colliding with a guard rail. What started out as an enjoyable trip to the science museum turned into a disaster. Miraculously no other vehicles were on the road, and none of us were seriously injured. A few weeks before, desperate I checked myself into a Crisis unit; I wanted the mental & physical anguish to go away. The medicine left me numb and in a fog. What happened for my life to be in such turmoil? Would I ever escape this nightmare and have a happy life?
